Inside the Pirates-Cardinals three-game series


Despite two starting pitchers getting hurt, the Pittsburgh Pirates took their first home series since mid-July by taking two-of-three from the St. Louis Cardinals.  The Pirates (43-84) are still two games back  of Baltimore (45-82) for the first pick in the 2011 draft and may challenge the modern-day club record of 112 losses.

PirateComing into the series the New York Mets hadn’t won a National League road series all season (0-13-4) or scored more than five runs in a game over their last 20.  That all changed in a hurry.  New York lit up RHPs Jeff Karstens and James McDonald in the first two games before LHP Zach Duke outpitched Mets ace Johan Santana in the series finale Sunday.
